Basing ourselves in the town of El Estor along the shores of Lake Izabal in the Eastern part of the country, these two days were spent conversing and learning about the contemporary issues in the region. The issues relate to the nickel mining companies located that has been based in the regional for over 40 years.
The first day was a long day of meetings with the women of Lote 8. This community far up the mountains around El Estor suffered greatly in 2007, when in combination with forced evictions because they live on company lands, 11 women from the community were gang-raped. In addition, we spent time with Angelica Choc and German Chub each of whom have suffered because of the mining companies. Angelica’s husband was murdered because he was a community leader and German is now paralyzed from the chest down.
